Lillian in Love both tickled and taught me. Sue Katz’s novel is about a life-long lesbian and a heterosexual widow becoming intimate and struggling through mutual skepticism and age-related interruptions to their first attempts at romance at an independent senior living home. I learned things I didn’t know: that someone who’s butch and looking to find a femme might find herself attracted, despite that wish, to another butch, and that blood pressure pills can give you dry mouth and constant urination. I laughed at Lillian’s politically incorrect irritation at a runny-nosed grandchild that she’s expected to adore, and at Lillian and her late husband discovering in the 1970s, thanks to the women’s movement, the erogenous zones that neither had known about before. I appreciated the author’s perspective on pre-Stonewall closeted queer life, about racism (the Black staffer feels a need “to keep his mouth in a smile”) and classism (Lillian disrupts the staffers’ dinner, then realizes she’s “crossed boundaries” like “one of those privileged liberals who lacks social radar.”). Most of all, I appreciate Lillian’s frank descriptions of her aging body, but also how “at 84, I’m learning to adore my own physical being.” I was surprised by the complicating shift in the plot, mid-story. A delightful read: ribald/rueful, real.

sweet story, very believable and entertaining.
It was good and funny light reading
Always be open to love. What could be more hopeful than that as we all age? Written with brave intimacy, humor and loving, direct characters, reading Lillian in Love will leave a smile in your heart.
This was a sweet story and very heart warming. It made me think of the movie 'Cloud Burst'. It gives one hope that life doesn't end in our golden years as long as we keep an open mind and an open heart.

If you’ve ever wondered what do old people really think about aging, offspring and sexuality, this is the book for you. Katz does a wonderful job of describing the complexity of new beginnings, old relationships and life’s roller coaster ride of ups and downs. Lillian is an authentic voice that feels like someone you could ask anything of and she’d tell you the truth. You will love “Lillian in Love”.
Lillian in Love is a delicious read. I consider myself an amateur anthropologist, and Katz's charming, engaging story broadened my knowledge of several groups. I learned a lot about Lesbian culture. The culture of the Senior Living facility was intriguing. Why is it that women seem to revert to those junior-high school behaviors when in doubt? Lillian is a lovely, fun, attractive character, but not without her quirks and insecurities. The sex scenes are steamy and fun. Lilian in Love is a love story with all of my favorite elements. I hope to read more of Katz's work soon.
Lillian in Love is a great book. Well-written - that great writing like you are talking to a friend. The characters are well drawn and engaging. The story is realistic and really fun. I bought this book after reading the author's book of short stories (also excellent) Lillian's Last Affair. I loved the title story, and this book continues it. (Although this also stands alone. But go ahead, read them both!) Highly recommended.
